~a live and slightly improvised mythology of mountains~
In February 2016 I went on a week’s trip to the Eastern Sierras with my brother and dad. The time in the California mountains brought together many of my personal mythologies about that land, which has been a significant place for me since I was a little girl. I sat down at the piano the night I returned home to Ontario and accidentally wrote these seven songs in one sitting. They weave together many of the wider mysteries those mountains hold for me and my family, and explore the many connections that have evolved from all my California trips.
I composed this song cycle in the heat of total improv, and have since worked to structure the songs enough to allow repeat performances, but little enough that there is still room for surprises.
This live-off-the-floor session was recorded in my living room a couple months after the trip, one busy Friday afternoon, in a stolen hour of free time. It is full of all the improvised mistakes and synchronicities that I originally composed this cycle from. Many thanks to Jess Nielsen who came over a couple days later to track some flute with this live take!
